About Me

I am a not yet 55 year old woman married for 25+ years, 4 kids, 1 dog and 1 cat. The kids are beginning to leave home. One is launched, one is in college and 2 are still at home. As a couple we are entering the final stage of our parenting journey: the teenage years and beyond. We are starting to dream and think and plan for those years when the house is quiet and it is just us once again. Please join me as I explore what it means to grow older with adventure and grace.

My Christmas Tree Rant

I was commenting on Kathy of Brazoscowgirl’s rant and started a rant of my own in her comment section! She graciously allowed my comment to post. I realized I need a brief rant of my own.

Since Christmas is almost upon us this is my Christmas tree rant. In point of fact, I love Christmas trees. This is a rant directed toward those people who feel the need to point out (often with smug moral superiority) that Christmas trees are in actuality pagan in origin! Shock!

To which I now rant “ Duh”.

Paganism in what is now Europe without a doubt predated Christianity. With the coming of the Gospel, the church fathers (at least some of them, there are Bah Hum Bug people in every generation) wisely realized that people desire a reason to celebrate before the impending cold dark of deep winter. What better reason to celebrate than the birth of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Just to clarify we do not celebrate Jesus’ birthday on December 25, we celebrate His birth.

Now if you are replacing a pagan celebration with one focused on the birth of the Savior (can you think of something better to celebrate?) and there are no Wal-Mart’s, flower marts or on line shopping available and you really do need something festive to decorate the house and it is winter and most everything is dead or in hibernation, what are you going use to decorate?

A pretty green fir tree! Available to anyone who needs celebratory decorations.

We believers plan to take over the Superbowl parties next! Moreover, no one had better say pigs in a blanket were originally a secular tradition or I will have to reply “Duh!”

Colored or white lights, which do you prefer?

Does not matter to me as long as I do not have to be the one to put them on the tree. Really dislike that job.

Love the way you put that; how true! :D

I eschewed the tree this year; a major mistake on my part. It's positively gloomy around here without it, the lights and all the other decorations that come out when the tree does... like my creche! I miss it so much, more than the tree, I think.

So I won't be making this mistake again... ;)

Merry Christmas, Carol!

Enjoy your tree! Enjoy celebrating Christ's birth! Enjoy Christmas and don't let anyone steal your joy because of some history. Merry Christmas!

Great perspective! I'm keeping my tree :-)

And this year I have both colored and white lights....

I have a tree in every stinkin' room in the house. Aside from one nativity scene, that's all the decorating I did this year. And the only ugly Christmas sweaters that I wore this year are the ones with trees. Love the trees.

Easter eggs are also pagan. That's why we do Resurrection Eggs at our house. Gotta love it!

So True, and funny! I love Christmas, and all its secular trappings. But my Joy originates not from the 'flesh' of the season, but from the 'spirit'. it's always an exciting time to be alive, knowing Emmanuel, God, is with us! We are truly blessed! A wonderful Christmas to you and yours!

You have got to be kidding me! Nothing makes sense in a politically correct world!

Go do your Tree!

Mooowah to you this Christmas!
