About Me

I am a not yet 55 year old woman married for 25+ years, 4 kids, 1 dog and 1 cat. The kids are beginning to leave home. One is launched, one is in college and 2 are still at home. As a couple we are entering the final stage of our parenting journey: the teenage years and beyond. We are starting to dream and think and plan for those years when the house is quiet and it is just us once again. Please join me as I explore what it means to grow older with adventure and grace.

Parenting Teens: Mom Choke Me

Admittedly a weird request. There are times I want to throttle the child but I have never been asked to do so before. This request was connected to practicing the self-defense portion of her belt testing.

She ran back into the class building yesterday and ran out again with broken boards. The boards were a little over an inch thick. “How did you break them?” I inquired.

“With my elbow, a side kick and a front kick” she replies as if breaking things with your feet were a common occurrence in most people’s lives.

Later I was asked to sit on her and pretend I was going to punch her in the face. Not a comfortable position for a mom to be in. Even less comfortable was being flipped by someone I outweigh by a good 50 (60) pounds.

Tae Kwon Do has taught her focus, power, strength and grace. Her teacher is about 4 foot something, a third-degree black belt and a Christ follower. My daughter has role modeled before her that a woman can be strong, graceful and smart and can use her strengths to God’s glory and for others good.

In addition, she can literally flip off her mom without getting in trouble.

Has your child made any weird requests?
